What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system and the effects of these disorders on general health. Doctors of Chiropractic seek the origin of illness in order to eliminate it, instead of simply treating the symptoms. This hands-on approach to health care includes patient examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, diagnosis, and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises as well as provide nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counseling.
Chiropractors are not limited to only back or neck pain relief. Overall, the body benefits from chiropractic therapy and back pain treatment as the chiropractor adjusts the imbalances of the spine and the entire skeletal system. A chiropractic adjustment restores joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become restricted in their movement, as a result of tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by any traumatic event such as improper lifting of a heavy object or repetitive stress (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome, poor spinal posture, leg length variation). Injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. An adjustment of the affected joint and tissues restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness and allowing tissues to heal. In addition to tissue injuries, research suggests that chiropractic care have helped patients suffering from asthma, sinus allergies, ADD/ADHD, colic, chronic ear infections, organ functions, and pregnancy.
Chiropractic adjustments rarely cause discomfort although some patients may experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours.
